Kidney diseases represent a significant public health challenge in the Amsterdam metropolitan region and its surrounding region, affecting over 250,000 individuals across all age groups. Lifestyle, ageing, environmental, socio-economic and genetic factors, ethnic background, all contribute on the risk of kidney diseases. A wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from common disorders such as diabetic nephropathy to rare genetic and autoimmune diseases illustrate the health impact, complexity and heterogeneity of kidney diseases, underscoring need for comprehensive research efforts aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.

Amsterdam Kidney Health aims to establish a collaborative platform at Amsterdam UMC, dedicated to advancing the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of non-immune mediated rare kidney diseases, immunopathological diseases, including kidney transplantation and communicable diseases, and life-span risks and non-communicable diseases leading to or complicated by kidney disease. By uniting expertise from all disciplines and leveraging cutting-edge technology, our vision is to pioneer breakthroughs in kidney health, ultimately leading to the prevention and cure of kidney diseases.
Mission
Our mission is to foster collaboration among key research groups within Amsterdam UMC, including Nephrology and Internal Medicine, Pediatric Nephrology, Nephropathology, Diabetology, Genetics, Immunology, Center for Experimental and Molecular Medicine, Vascular Medicine, Public Health & Epidemiology, Medical Informatics, and Urology & Pediatric Urology.
